Dr. George Alcorn

Dr George Alcorn earned the BA degree in physics from Occidental
College where he accepted a four year scholarship. During his
undergraduate studies he earned eight letters in football and baseball.
His MS and Ph.D degrees were received from Howard University in
Washington, DC .He was elected to the national honor societies, Sigma
Pi Sigma and Sigma Xi.
In addition to NASA, Dr. Alcorn worked in private industry (IBM, Perkin
Elmer, and Philco Ford) in R&D with over 20 inventions patented
and/or published leading to numerous awards won. For over 25 years he
has served as an adjunct full professor teaching physics and electrical
engineering .He has served as the IBM Visiting Professor promoting
advanced technologies to universities .He specialized in teaching
modern creative techniques for device conception and device fabrication
at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Dr Alcorn was a pioneer
in using particle techniques like plasmas and sputtering methods to
make high performance semiconductor devices.
In his over 16 years of management at NASA,Dr Alcorn has served as
Deputy Project Manager Space Station Advanced Development ,Chief of the
Technology Commercialization Office ,Project Manager for the Airborne
Lidar Topographical Mapping System (ALTMS) and managed the NASA
Technology Integration Division .He also served as Deputy Program
manager of the center's Code R research program.
Dr Alcorn has received a NASA medal for his work in recruiting minority
scientists and engineers and helping small businesses have successful
research programs. He was a winner of Government Executives Magazine's
prestigious (Federal Government) Technology Leadership Award for the
Airborne Lidar Topographical Mapping System (1999). He served as
project manager for that endeavor .At IBM he was a high second plateau
inventor and at Goddard he was Inventor of the Year .He served as an
original mentor and organizer of the UMBC Myerhoff Program which had
the goal to produce talented minority Ph.Ds in science and mathematics.
In 2001 Dr Alcorn was
awarded special congressional recognition by Congresswoman Donna M.
Christian-Christensen (D-VI) for his efforts in helping Virgin Islands
businesses through application of NASA technology and knowledge of
technology programs .
In the past, his
Saturdays have been dedicated to teaching children. For over 17 year,
as a founder of the Saturday Academy he has taught such courses as C++
to bright inner city Jr High School Students.
