
Dr. Paal Brekke
is the ESA SOHO Deputy Project Scientist at GSFC. His main responsibility
is public outreach and media relations as well as managing the SOHO mission
together with the SOHO project Scientist Team. He joined ESA in 1999.
Prior to his assignement
for ESA he worked at the the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics, University
of Oslo. Since 1993 he participated in the Norwegian involvement's in
preparing the EUV spectrometers CDS and SUMER on SOHO. His main responsibilities
beside pursuing scientific work was to develop the data display software
for CDS and to prepare for the operation of SOHO. In 1994 he received
Fulbright award to stay at NASA GSFC for 6 months preparing for the SOHO
mission and at the High Altitude Observatory in Boulder CO for another
6 months pursuing science. After the launch of SOHO in December 1995 he
was part of the science operation team at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center
as the Oslo representative.
Paal Brekke was
born in Oslo in 1961. He received his Dr. Scient degree in 1993 from the
Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics, University of Oslo with focus on
the ultraviolet (UV) emissions from the sun observed with instruments
on rockets and the space shuttle. Much of his work focuses on dynamical
aspects of the Sun and measuring variations in solar UV radiation.
