Dr. Horace Mitchell
Branch Head
Scientific Applications and Visualization Branch
Horace Mitchell received his undergraduate and graduate degrees
in physics from Rice University in Houston, Texas. After receiving his
doctorate in 1978, he joined Science Applications International
Corporation (SAIC) as a research physicist, studying plasma transport
and instability processes in the Earth's ionosphere and magnetosphere.
His interest in scientific visualization led him in 1991 to a position
as branch head of the Scientific Applications and Visualization Branch,
part of the Space Data and Computing Division at NASA's Goddard Space
Flight Center. During 1995, Dr. Mitchell headed the Scientific and
Engineering Workstation II Procurement. In 1996, he became
Visualization Program Manager of the Earth and Space Data Computing
Division, directing visualization activities that include the
Scientific Visualization Studio and the GLOBE Visualization Development
Program, a position he continues to hold. During 1996 and 1997, he also
held the positions of Deputy Director and Acting Director of NASA's
Consolidated Supercomputing Management Office (CoSMO) at NASA Ames
Research Center.
