World Space Week Event

There was a record-breaking turnout of 565 in attendance for this week's World Space Week 2001 Educational Awards luncheon. The keynote speaker at this event as Senator Barbara Mikulski. The luncheon was presented by the Maryland Space Business Roundtable, in partnership with Prince George's Economic Development Corp. and Spaceweek International Association.

Goddard's Educational Programs Office provided a Center tour for World Space Week student award winners from four states, including Pa., Texas, Virginia and Maryland, and two foreign countries, Croatia and Turkey. Local award winners were from Prince George's County school, Stephan Decatur Middle School.

On her way to La Plata, Maryland to assess the damage from the past weekend tornado, Senator Mikulski congratulated the student awardees for their creative applications of "space in the classroom"; and gave praise to the Goddard team for their educational outreach efforts in Maryland and GSFC's most recent achievements with the 3B HST Servicing mission. In addition, Mikulski and her colleague Maryland Senator Paul Sarbanes would continue their efforts on behalf of NASA to continue to support and increase the science budget and support NASA's new Administrator, Sean O'Keefe.

Many dignitaries were present at this event, including Superintendent of PG County Schools, Dr. Iris Metts, MD Delegate James Hubbard and Dr. Sciafani, counselor to the U.S. Secretary of Education.
