Volunteers Needed for Nutrition Study

The USDA Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center (BHNRC), in cooperation with the Johns Hopkins University, is conducting a nutrition study designed to learn about what people eat and the calories they burn. Volunteers are now being recruited to participate in this 14-day study during the time periods from October through November 2002 and mid-January through March 2003. Men and women 30 - 69 years old will be selected after a medical evaluation and blood and urine screening. THIS IS NOT A FEEDING STUDY AND THERE ARE NO DIETARY RESTRICTIONS. This is not a weight loss study. Participants completing the study will receive $325.

Participants will be selected based on their age, height, weight, health status, and availability to complete the study. Diabetics, persons taking diuretics or certain steroid medications, pregnant or nursing women, and nutrition professionals are excluded from participating.

Over the 14-day study period, participants will agree to: travel six times to the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center; drink a special water solution which will be used to help measure the calories you burn, be interviewed three times by a trained interviewer about the foods you eat, and have blood and urine samples collected and your body composition measured by DEXA.

Schedule: Study activities will be conducted over 14-day periods during the months of October through November 2002 and mid-January through March 2003.

Payment: Volunteers completing all study requirements will receive $325.

CISCO Networking Academy - Crossland High School, Goddard Education Programs has received a request for volunteers to serve as coaches for the Cisco Networking Academy at Crossland High School in Temple Hills Maryland. Volunteers need not have specialized networking knowledge. The focus of this program will be the sharing of interpersonal and workplace communication skills young people will need to be successful in their future work. A half-day training session for volunteer coaches is planned on August 21 at Crossland High School. The program will begin in September 2002, with lessons provided online to assist the four coaches needed in their work with the students. Each team will work with a morning class made up of juniors and seniors taking networking classes. Team members will work with the students once or twice a month in sessions that last for an hour and a quarter. If you are interested or have additional questions, please call or email John DiTomasso, Director of TECH CORPS Maryland at 410-730-3071 or email: johndit@us.net.
