Director's Discretionary Fund (DDF) Call For Proposals
The due date
for Extension and New 2003 Director's Discretionary Fund (DDF) Call
for Proposals has been extended to Wednesday, Sept. 25. Proposals
selected for ORAL REVIEWS will be scheduled for the following dates:
Oct. 29, Oct. 30, Oct. 31, Nov. 5, Nov. 6 and possibly Nov. 7. Applicants
should receive letter notification and/or a phone call for selected
proposals by Oct. 14. All reviews will be held in the Management
Conference Center (MCC), Bldg. 8, Room N303. For more information,

FAIR
Act Inventory
All Federal
agencies are required by the provisions of the Federal Activities
Inventory Reform (FAIR) Act of 1998 to establish an annual inventory
of commercial activities performed in the Agency. NASA Headquarters
has now posted its 2002 FAIR Act Inventory list to the following
website: http://competitivesourcing.nasa.gov
Answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) are also posted on the
same website. Center Management encourages employees to check that
source since it contains some background information which may be
of interest to all.
Goddard
Education Programs has received a request for:
Journey Through
the Universe, a cadre of 50-60 scientists/engineers to visit
students in partnership with the District of Columbia public schools.
The program provides activities during a week long celebration of
learning - Journey through the Universe, conducted by teams of researchers,
engineers and scientists trained to use earth science education
materials that bring the universe into the classroom. Family science
events will also be included at three area high schools and the
National Air and Space Museum. This year's journey will take place
October 21-25, 2002 focusing on the 6th grade. You may wish to join
the National team that travels around the nation with the Journey
through the Universe message. If interested, please call Rosemary

will be provided.
Goddard Professionals
Needed for High School Campaign - for professional representatives
to make presentations to high School freshman in their classrooms
about were they want to go in life and how to get there emphasizing
the importance of performing well in school, building an impressive
transcript, and preparing for the future. The program will be expanded
to 12 high schools and are in need of more potential speakers from
our surrounding area. The Achievement Counts campaign is looking
for articulate, energetic people of various cultural, ethnic and
educational backgrounds, to help deliver the Achievement Counts
message. There will be a training session available in September
prior to any visitations. Presentations will be scheduled during

Registration
for 12th Annual Fall Crafts Fair
GEWA's Fall
Crafts Fair will be held Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. til 2 p.m. in the
bldg. 8 auditorium. Registration is $15 per space (10'x10' area
with one 3'x5' table + 2 chairs) and is open to all GSFC government
and contractor employees, retirees, family members and friends.
Items must be handmade. Registration forms and checks are due by
COB September 27. Forms are available at the GEWA Store, or contact

Volunteers
Needed for a Nutrition Study Hispanic and Asian American Men and
Women 21 - 65 Years Old
The Diet and
Human Performance Laboratory, Beltsville Human Nutrition Research
Center, U.S. Department of Agriculture and Johns Hopkins University
are conducting a human nutrition study for Hispanic and Asian American
men and women. This study is designed to assess the menus at the
Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center's Human Study Facility
and to study food selection and recall. We will recruit a total
of 280 people in groups of 70. Currently we are recruiting Hispanic
and Asian American men and women. We also need 25 African American
men.
Each subject
will be asked to have percent body fat measured by dual x-ray energy
absorptiometry (the same technique used for determining bone density),
to complete questionnaires about their eating habits, and to eat
all meals for one day at the Human Study Facility. Those eligible
to participate will have free measurements of body fat and estimates
of their bone density.
Volunteers will
be required to visit the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center
a minimum of 3 times. You will be considered ineligible for this
study if you have diabetes, thyroid disease, are pregnant or nursing,
or if you are currently participating in a weight loss program or
another human nutrition study.
Accurate heights
and weights will be used to select volunteers, and will be measured
on the first visit.
Basic English
skills related to food and eating are required for participation.
No public transportation is available. A U.S. social security number
is necessary for payment.
Volunteers will
receive a total of $100. ($30 for answering questions from a series
of questionnaires about their food intake, $30 for eating meals
at the Human Study Facility for one complete day, and a $40 bonus
for completing the entire study).
