IS&T Colloquium

Who: Dr. Stuart Madnick, will present "Intelligent Integration of Information or Where did NASA's Mars Orbiter go?" Dr. Madnick's talk focuses on the emergence of aggregators, entities that collect information from a wide range of sources, with or without prior agreement, and add value through post-aggregation services. Aggregators present both enormous opportunities and threats for existing businesses and organizations. Major technical challenges relate to the automated and intelligent integration of information. New Web-page extraction tools, context sensitive mediators, and agent technologies have greatly reduced the barriers to constructing aggregators. Work at MIT to develop these new technologies will be described as well.

When/Where: Thurs, Oct 3 at 3:30 in the bldg 3 Goett Auditorium

Volunteers for Medical Engineers (VME) Demonstration

What: Do you want to play with your engineering skills and have fun outside of your job? Do you have hands-on building skills but need a little design assistance to make an idea work as you solve an accessibility problem? Do you need adaptive equipment for improving your quality of life with your disability? IF ANY OF THE ABOVE APPLY then COME JOIN US

VME is a Baltimore-based nonprofit organization that utilizes engineers (and other talented people) who volunteer their time and expertise to develop new devices or adaptations of existing devices to enable and encourage independence for people with disabilities. VME will discuss engineering techniques that are used to develop and demonstrate different types of devices. VME partners with local schools along with private individuals to help them achieve the goals of improving access, progressing in educational endeavors, and increase opportunities in both industry and their personal lives.
