Goddard in the News

Earth Science:

The split of the ozone hole over the Antarctic was of great media attention. CBS Evening News featured a story with visualizations and annotated the images to guide television viewers of the location and the splitting of the hole. CNN did an interview with Paul Newman to explain the nuances of this year's hole and more than 15 stories were broadcast on CNN networks. In addition, several major media networks and their affiliates broadcast stories of the splitting ozone, which totaled to 199, to an estimated audience of 25-30 million.

Space Science:

Spaceflight now.com featured an article on the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite-I (TDRS-I) reaching orbit after a delay that was due to one of the two fuel tanks aboard the satellite not pressurizing properly shortly after its March 8 launch.

Space.com featured an article regarding seeing the life cycle of black hole emissions. The article discusses the observing of high-energy jets, which has been done with the use of spacecraft such as NASA's Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and Chandra X-ray Observatory. Kim Weaver an astrophysicist at Goddard is quoted in the article providing an explanation of the jets and why this observance is significant.
