Sniper
Attacks
We are all
emotionally frustrated by the random sniper attacks that have
occurred during the past week or so in the Washington metropolitan
area and surrounding suburbs. News media accounts are keeping
us informed of this series of attacks and law enforcement is doing
its best to track down the ruthless assailant. It is a good bet
that the killer will ultimately be captured based on information
provided by the public. If you can provide information about any
of the incidents, please do not hesitate to contact the new regional
tip line at 1-888-324-9800.
If you are
experiencing difficulties coping with the growing number of sniper
attacks throughout our area, remember that assistance is available
through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). If you are a civil
servant, you are encouraged to contact an EAP counselor by calling
x6-4600. If you are a contractor, you may seek counseling
assistance through your company EAP service providers.
Worldwide Caution
The State Department
has issued a new Worldwide Caution Public Announcement for overseas
travelers. In light of the recent audio tape attributed to Osama
bin Laden and other reports of threats to American interests,
the updated Worldwide Caution has been issued to alert Americans
to the need to remain vigilant and to remind them of the continuing
threat of terrorist actions that may target civilians.
October - Crime Prevention Month
October is
designated Crime Prevention Month. Check out the National Crime
Prevention Council web site at http://www.ncpc.org.
The web site provides a wealth of information about ongoing safety
and security programs available throughout the nation. Of particular
interest during these trying times is a new school safety program
launched by the National Safety and Security Council in late September
called "Be Safe and Sound." Just click on the "Be
Safe and Sound" logo in the middle of the NCPC home page
for information this new program. You might want to become involved
in promoting this program at your local schools.
While on the
Center, please wear your NASA or GSFC badge at all times, call
x911 to report any emergencies, and report any suspicious
activities (non-emergencies) to the Security Operations Center
at x6-8661. While off the Center, be aware of your surroundings
and err on the side of caution when parking at gas stations and
other shopping venues.
