Space
and Cosmic Ray Physics Seminar
Who:
Dr. P. Sokolsky from the University of Utah will discuss the topic
entitled, "The Sky Above, The Mud Below: Ultra-High Energy
Cosmic-Ray Controversy." The Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray (UHECR
- cosmic rays with energies greater than 10^17 eV) spectrum has
been measured by two different techniques -- one based on atmospheric
fluorescence (HiRes) and one based on sampling the shower as it
hits the ground (AGASA). The results do not agree well in the neighborhood
of the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cut-off. The status of the measurements
and systematics will be discussed and ways to resolve the issue
suggested.
