Native American History Month - Honoring Life, Elders, Heritage

In observance of Native American, Goddard recognizes Navy Commander John B. Harrington the first registered member of the Chickasaw tribe who will be aboard STS-113. The Space Shuttle launch is scheduled between midnight and 3 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11. For more on Harrington, go to: http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/Bios/

STS-113 will be the 16th Shuttle flight to visit the International Space Station. The Space Shuttle Endeavour will continue the outward expansion of the orbital outpost by delivering the P1 (Port-One) Truss. Also, Endeavour will deliver the expedition Six crew to the Station and return the Expedition Five crew to Earth. .

Throughout the month of November Goddard Space Flight Center will unite with our nation in celebrating Native American History Month. There are many activities scheduled throughout the month organized to educate, honor and celebrate the rich heritage of the first Americans.

Upcoming scheduled events in observance of Native American Month:

  • Wednesday, November 13, 2002
    11:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
    Building 1, Cafeteria Building 21, Cafeteria
    The GSFC cafeteria celebrates Native American History Month with Native American Cuisine: Indian Corn Tacos, Honey Glazed Salmon, Pecan Wild Rice and Butternut Squash

  • Wednesday, November 20, 2002
    9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
    Building 3, Auditorium
    Indian Jewelry and Cultural Items Sale

    Come and choose from a wide selection of Native American jewelry and cultural items that will be for sale.

  • Stay and enjoy the Bear Creek Drummers and Singers while you are there from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. The event will feature traditional Native American dances, drumming, and stories by members of the Monacan Indian Nation of Virginia.
