Safety Tidbits

Image of leaves

The Fall season can be very harazardous due to fallen leaves. So here a are few tidbits that can be applied at home or here on Center.

  • The burning of candles is prohibited at the Center due to the fire hazard they present.
  • The abundance of leaves around center and everywhere cause a slip/trip/fall hazard that we must all be aware of. Be careful when walking around them, they become slippery when wet.
  • Do not place leaves in roadways or pile them around parked cars or fire hydrants. Hidden fire hydrants are a hazard for drivers and firefighters. They can also clog storm sewers.
  • Keep roofs free of debris. Leaves, pine straw, moss and twig that collection the roof and in gutters invite disaster.
  • Safely dispose of stove, fireplace, and grill ashes. First place them in a metal bucket, soak with water, and then bury them in mineral soil.
  • Never store flammable material like firewood or lumber under or near your home. Keep it at least 100 feet away from the house, but never uphill because burning material will roll.
  • Never park a catalyst-equipped car, or any car, on a pile of dry leaves or other dry vegetation. Catalysts reduce emissions by accelerating the combustion of pollutants leaving the engine. In doing this job, they get hot and could pose a fire hazard.
