National media
coverage was given to the weekend Pegasus launch of SORCE. SORCE
was successfully released from a Pegasus XL rocket on Saturday,
Jan. 25 from off the coast of the Kennedy Space Center, Fla. National
coverage included coverage from three CNN shows on Saturday
with airings ranging from about 20 seconds to 2 minutes in eight
of the top 10 news markets for a combined estimated audience of
over 3 million in those cities alone.
Images from
the new Solar X-ray Imager (SXI) instrument aboard GOES-12 was featured
on many major media outlets this week, including ABC World News
Tonight, FOX and CNN, with an estimated combined
audience of about 15 million viewers. Images from the SXI will be
used to monitor and forecast the sources of space weather disturbances
from the Sun, enabling forecasters to predict disturbances to Earth's
space environment that can destroy satellites, disrupt radio communications
or surge power grids, as well as endanger astronauts working in
space.
