Colloquium
Who:
Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, III President, University of Maryland Baltimore
County (UMBC) will discuss the topic "Education for the 21st
Century: Creating a Climate of Success for All." Dr. Hrabowski,
III will address the rapid and dramatic technological and demographic
changes present our nation's schools, colleges and universities
and the enormous challenges for education students in science, engineering
and technology in the new century. Dr. Hrabowski spent much of his
professional career studying minority student achievement and addressing
the achievement gap between minority and other students with special
focus on the under-representation of African Americans in sciences,
mathematics and engineering. His outcome led to the creation of
the Meyerhoff Scholars Program for high-achieving minority students
in these fields at UMBC.

Science and Technology
Who:
Dr. James Coplien is an associate professor of Computer Science
at North Central College in Naperville, IL. and is a Visiting Professor
at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology.
Dr. Coplien will discuss the topic entitled, "Software Patterns"
and will describe software patterns as they are being used on large
projects, particularly in telecommunications, in a way that was
initially intended and which goes far beyond the Design Patterns
of the object-oriented community.

Wed., Feb 26 at 3:30 pm in the bldg. 3 Goett Auditorium followed

Celebrate
National Engineers Week with the Goddard Library

BIG
Lunchtime Fish Fry
What:
The GSFC/WFF Blacks In Government (BIG) Chapter is sponsoring a
lunchtime fish fry. The menu includes: fish (2pcs.) potato salad,
bread, soda, greenbeans and condiments such as hot sauce, mustard
and ketchup. The cost is $6

Gras Party -- March 4th
The spirit of
the French Quarter is coming to the Rec Center at 3:30 p.m. -- We're
ladling up authentic New Orleans gumbo with French bread, fresh
garden salad, assorted hors d'oeuvres, King Cake and beer, wine
and sodas! Beads for everyone, a great DJ for dancing and CASH door
prizes make this a great event.
Tickets are
on sale at the GEWA Store: $10/person til COB Feb. 21, $15/person

Goddard
Dance Club
The Goddard
Dance Club now offers basic ballroom dance lessons on Sunday. Come
and learn "Quick Step" the featured dance for the last
two Sundays in February. The instructor will start off with beginning
material and include some intermediate material later in the class.
The Class will be Sundays 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. with a dance practice
session from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. The cost is just $5 per person (half
price for February) which includes the class and practice session.
The Goddard
Dance Club Valentine's Pot Luck Dinner Dance is scheduled for Saturday,
February 15, from 7 p.m. - 11 p.m. If you are interested in attending,

or meet at the front entrance of Goddard at 6:45 p.m.. Pot luck
dinner dances are scheduled monthly during 2003 on every third Saturday
of the month, except in the month of December when the dance will
be held on Saturday, December 6th. There is also a second pot luck
dinner dance scheduled on Saturday, August 30th. So mark your calendars
now.
"The
Curious Savage" -- MAD's Winter Show
This delightful,
quirky comedy opens at the GSFC Rec Center on Valentine's Day (February
14); other performances are on February 15, 16, 21, 22, 23, 28,
and March 1. The evening also includes hot/cold hors d'oeuvres,
beer/wine/non-alcoholic beverages, and a Pre-Show Cabaret. Please
