Freeman Hrabowski spoke about nuturing a new generation. |

The Hampton
University graduate spoke of helping children to learn at their
time at their level. He gave an example of an 11-year-old child
that is already taking college courses. He also spoke of a program
at UMBC that allows 9-16 year olds to take advanced courses. "How
do we as a society help large numbers of American children both
want to be smart and have the opportunity to emerge themselves in
reading, mathematics and thinking skills. That is the challenge
that we face at a time when society is becoming increasingly technological,"
said Hrabowski.
"Our challenge
is to focus on being leaders with a vision that things can be better
than they are," said Hrabowski. He said then it is our challenge
to figure out how to bring our children into that vision. Hrabowski
spoke of the work at NASA as it partners research, training and
educators. He applauded the look into what is happening in the post
doctorate spectrum. He also agreed with NASA initiatives to assist
in preparing teachers on all those issues as we look at how we take
our society to the next level.
"How do we help America's children to see education not just
as a necessity but the greatest thing that could possibly happen
to them," he asked. Hrabowski said that we must help children
realize that they have the opportunity to be the best.
"My challenge
to you as we think about leadership, as we think about educating
people, as we think about the role that NASA will play in the future
of humankind, is that our relationship will be so important that
people will know us by how we elevate people or how we lead them
to where they are," said Hrabowski.

In conclusion
he recalled a statement his mother had made as she reflected on
her many years as a teacher, "Teachers touch eternity through
their students." Hrabowski insist that we can all be teachers
in our own way and thus have the same influence his mother spoke
of.
