Quarterly
Session for SES Employees Set for March 18
Center Director
A.V. Diaz has instituted Quarterly sessions for all SES employees
and the first session will be held on March 18, 2003, from 3:00
- 5:00 p.m. in Bldg. 32, Room N202. All SES employees are expected
to attend. Among the topics to be discussed at the first SES Quarterly
session is the new selection and performance criteria, for which
all SES employees will be held accountable, which became effective
March 1. SES employees should RSVP to Lori.A.Moore@nasa.gov,
SES Program Manager concerning their attendance.
Earth
Science Project Leadership
With the two
most recent Earth Observing System launches of ICESat and SORCE,
the program is currently undergoing several changes. Jim Watzin
lead the ICESat project to its successful launch in January and
now Watzin will be leading the NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP).
The NPP project was previously led by Kevin Grady, Grady
will now serve as the Project Manager for Gamma-Ray Large Area Space
Telescope (GLAST).
Under Bill
Ochs leadership, SORCE successfully launched in January also.
Ochs is moving on to serve as the Project Manager for the Landsat
Data Continuity Mission. Ochs predecessor, Doug McCuistion
has left Goddard and is now at NASA Headquarters as the Director
for the Program Planning and Development Division for the Earth
Science Enterprise. Good luck to all!
Call
for 2003 Software of the Year Award Submissions Due March 14, 2003
NASA has opened
nominations for its 2003 Software of the Year Award, which recognizes
software developed and owned by NASA. The award is sponsored by
the Office of Safety and Mission Assurance, NASA's Chief Engineer,
and NASA's Inventions and Contributions Board. Last year Goddard
's submission resulted in $45,000 being awarded to the AutoConf
team. Full details on submitting applications can be found on the
Inventions and Contributions Board homepage at http://icb.nasa.gov/
or refer to Announcement No. 03-04. Information about past winners
and finalists can also be found at that Web site. Entries and supporting
material must be submitted by March 14, 2003, to Ms. Dale Hithon,

Mammovan Visits Goddard

Mobile Mammovan will be at Goddard Space Flight Center on Wednesday,
March 26, 2003.

o Have not had a mammogram in the past 12 months
o Are not experiencing symptoms such as a lump or pain in the breast
o Do not have breast implants
o Have not been treated previously for breast cancer

NASA
Scholarship Fund Applications
Once again,
the announcement has been received for college scholarships for
qualified dependents of NASA and former NASA employees. The scholarships
are provided and awarded by the NASA College Scholarship Fund, Inc.
The scholarship fund was established from the direct result of a
substantial unsolicited gift offered by the noted Pulitzer Prize
winning author, James Michener. Other contributions have been made
by the Freedom Forum to honor Shuttle crewmembers and the JSC Chapter
of the NASA Alumni League and contributions through the Combined
Federal Campaign. Six scholarships will be awarded in the amount
of $2,000 each, renewable for a maximum of $8,000 over 6 calendar

Logic Devices (MAPLD) International Conference. Programmable devices,

Volunteers
Needed for Educational Program
Goddard Education
Programs has received a request for volunteers for:
Liberty High
School Science Fair, volunteers to serve as judges for the first
annual Liberty High School Science Fair in April 2003. The
event is sponsored by the Science Club and is for students in grades
9-12. The Science Fair committee cordially extends an invitation
to you for participation in judging exhibits, interviewing each
student about his/her projects and experiences investigating selected
math, science and technology topics. If you are interested, please

Timonium
Elementary School Career Day, volunteers will serve as speakers
to highlight their careers by providing interactive learning experience
for students. There are booths available for students to visit whereby
they can choose three careers that interest them the most. The activity
will be an all day event on Wednesday, May 21, 2003, from
9:00 am to 3:00 pm for the entire student body. The school is located
in Baltimore County. Lunch will be provided. If you are interested,

The Federation
of Galaxy Explorers, volunteers are needed to assist in educating
and inspiring youth in space related science and engineering by
expanding the frontiers of science and technology. The mission of
the Galaxy explorers is to educate, guide and prepare the next generation
to accept the challenge of expanding humankind's presence in space.
You can learn more about the program at www.foge.org. Volunteers
will participate in after school activities with easy to understand
educational materials that provide a hands-on understanding of space
science, earth science, engineering and rocketry. Another theme,
Space Citizenship, will address the role of government, power of
citizens in a democracy, and the promise of space expressed in art,
writing, history and business. Organized into local "Mission
Teams" meeting on a monthly basis, materials, workbooks and
web site support for instruction with hands-on activities are provided.
Field trips and awards are part of the program encouraging self-esteem
