Space and Cosmic Ray Physics Seminar

Who: Dr. A. Harding Dr. Harding from Goddard's Gamma and Comic Ray Astrophysics Branch will discuss the topic, "Gamma-Ray Pulsars and Unidentified EGRET Sources." Dr. Harding will present results from several numerical simulations of pulsars in the galaxy, which predict the number of pulsars detected by gamma-ray and radio surveys assuming different models for the high-energy emission beam and its relation to the radio beam. Such studies indicate that a potentially large fraction of the unidentified sources in the plane and in the Gould Belt could be pulsars, but the different emission models predict very different ratios of radio-loud to radio-quiet gamma-ray pulsars. Future gamma-ray pulsar detections by AGILE and GLAST will provide the greatly improved statistics necessary to discriminate between models of high-energy emission.

When/Where: Mon., Mar 17 in the Computer and Space Sciences bldg, rm 2400 at 4:30 p.m. Tea and cookies from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Director's Colloquium

What: In honor of the Outstanding Management Award Winners, Ms. Patricia McLagan will speak on "The Age of Participation: The New World of Work

When/Where: Tues, March 25 in bldg. 3 Goett Auditorium. The awards ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. The presentation will be from 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Finite Element Modeling Continuous Improvement (FEMCI) Workshop

What: Mechanical Systems Analysis and Simulation Branch will host the annual Finite Element Modeling Continuous Improvement (FEMCI) Workshop. The workshop allows engineers to present innovative engineering solutions to aerospace structural problems though papers, presentations, and posters. The format also allows engineers to talk directly to several FEA software vendors such as MSC NASTRAN, ABAQUS, ANSYS, etc. Abstracts are being solicited for presentations/posters that address topics in finite element modeling and structural mechanics that are new, innovative, or differ from established techniques. Topics include but are not limited to the following areas:

  • Ground test and/or space flight simulations
  • Innovative design solutions
  • Integrated modeling techniques
  • Model correlation
  • Multidisciplinary problems (thermal-structural-optical, controls-structures, etc.)
  • Nonlinear problems
  • Optimization
  • Structural dynamics

Prospective presenters are invited to submit brief abstracts (limited to 1 page including figures) to John Johnston at John.D.Johnston@nasa.gov.

When/Where: Abstracts are due no later than March 21, 2003. Annual Workshop will be held on May 7-8, 2003. All sessions will be held at the NASA GSFC Visitor Center. There is no cost to attend.

For more info: Contact Jim Loughlinvia email at James.P.Loughlin@nasa.gov, 301-286-6114 or visit, http://femci.gsfc.nasa.gov/workshop.

Upcoming Training

In the IDP Workshop for Supervisors and the IDP Workshop for Employees, many questions have come up around the IDP process. Under OHR's career development page, there is a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) that have come from both supervisors and employees. These questions have been answered by OHR staff and legal counsel. Please take time to review these FAQs at http://ohr.gsfc.nasa.gov/DevGuide/idp.htm. Questions? Please contact Tracey White at tcwhite@pop100.gsfc.nasa.gov
