Rehabilitation
of Parkway Bridge
Using the Federal
Highway Administration as the procuring agency, the Goddard Space
Flight Center entered into a contract with Martins Construction
Corporation on January 18, 2003, for the rehabilitation of the bridge
and ramps to the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (Rt 295). Work on
this contract will begin shortly, and should be complete in approximately
18 months. During construction, the bridge will remain in service,
although lanes will be narrowed and moderated at times. Employees
passing over the bridge by exiting from or to the southbound Parkway
are encouraged to use alternative entrances. The Facilities Management
Division will continue to provide updates to the Goddard community
at http://gsfc-artemis.gsfc.nasa.gov/220/fmdproj.html.

The bridge was
originally built in 1966 and needs a major restoration to extend
its useful life. This contract marks the first major repair of the
bridge in its 37year life. The project includes the complete removal
and replacement of the concrete deck and parapet sidewalls across
the 177 meter length of the bridge; removal of the paint for the
supporting steel girders and beams and repainting; repairing the
concrete piers that support the steel girders; and miscellaneous
work at each abutment and approach.
