New
Smithsonian Science Seminar Series Begins April 2 with Nobel Prize
Winner Riccardo Giacconi
What:
The Smithsonian Congress of Scholars invites all SI staff and interested
members of the public to attend the inaugural presentation in its
new Smithsonian Science Seminar Series. Nobel Prize laureate Riccardo
Giacconi will speak on "Cosmic X-ray Sources."
Formerly Associate Director of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory,
Dr. Giacconi was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for 2002 for
his pioneering contributions to astrophysics, which have led to
the discovery of the sources of cosmic x-rays. In 1962, he and his
group at American Science and Engineering, detected the first extra-solar
X-ray source, and in 1970, they launched the satellite "Uhuru,"
which discovered hundreds of X-ray sources.
When/Where:
Wednesday, April 2, at 12:00 noon, in NMNH's Baird Auditorium
Presentations
in the new Smithsonian Science Seminar Series will be delivered
on the second or third Wednesday of each month, at 12:00 noon in

Dr. David Fogel, Chief Executive Officer of Natural Selection, Inc.
in La Jolla, California. Dr. Fogel will discuss "Evolutionary
Computation: Darwinian Thinking Solves Real-World Problems."
This lecture will offer the motivation for using evolution as basis
for optimizing solutions, as well as examples of its successful
application to problems in signal modeling, medicine and entertainment.
In particular, the evolutionary program "Blondie24," which
taught itself how to play checkers and learned to compete at the
level of human experts will be demonstrated.

Upcoming
Training
In the IDP Workshop for Supervisors and the IDP Workshop
for Employees, many questions have come up around the IDP process.
Under OHR's career development page, there is a list of Frequently
Asked Questions (FAQs) that have come from both supervisors and
employees. These questions have been answered by OHR staff and legal
counsel. Please take time to review these FAQs at http://ohr.gsfc.nasa.gov/DevGuide/idp.htm.
Questions? Please contact Tracey White at tcwhite@pop100.gsfc.nasa.gov
