B-W Parkway Bridge Restoration

Progress on this project is noticeable by the removal of the concrete median strip, creating a third lane on the bridge. The third lane allows for a construction zone and two lanes of traffic. Beginning Monday, April 28, 2003, the traffic pattern will shift to the northern two-thirds of the bridge width. The travel lanes will be narrower than typically expected, so please use caution and adjust travel speeds accordingly. Once these lanes are established, demolition work will begin resulting in additional traffic changes. From 6:00 to 8:30 am, and again from 4:00 to 6:00 pm, one lane in each direction will be operable. During the work day between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm, one lane will be open and road crews will regulate travel across the bridge. Delays of a short duration will probably occur at this time. The Facilities Management Division appreciates your patience and care to safeguard construction personnel and other motorists during the restoration project.

Gypsy Moth Aerial Spraying

The USDA Forest Service has updated a potential start date for aerial spraying for gypsy moth treatment to Sunday, April 27th. Treatment will be accomplished with a helicopter. This is a multi-federal agency project in the Laurel, Beltsville, Greenbelt area with an agent GYPCHEK (a gypsy moth virus). GSFC property will be treated on 42 wooded acres of the east campus at approximately Soil Conservation Rd. and Collimation Tower Rd. (behind building 25). USDA/BARC will be treating a wooded area outside our west campus fence line and the B/W parkway. Adequate safety buffers have been built in the project to not affect human activities, therefore, normal operations will continue at GSFC. However, informative signs will be posted over the weekend on popular walking and jogging trails closest to the treatment blocks. The agent GYPCHEK has no known human affects unless there are existing allergies to gypsy moths themselves. Indoor shelter would be adequate for protection if there are any exposure concerns during the operations. Check dateline and the intranet for project updates. You may also contact Darlene Squibb on 6-6137 for further information.

Men and Women Needed for Energy/Nutrition Study

The USDA/John Hopkins Universtiy is holding information meetings to recruit an additional 100 adults 30 to 69 years old for summer groups in 2003. If you are already participating in this study, do not respond to this message -- you may not participate more than once.

This study is designed to learn about what people eat and the calories they burn. THIS IS NOT A FEEDING STUDY AND THERE ARE NO DIETARY RESTRICTIONS. Participants will receive $325 for completing the main study, plus $25 for each of two optional tests.

Following a medical evaluation and blood and urine screening, participants will be selected based on their age, height, weight, health status, and availability to complete the study. Diabetics, persons taking diuretics or certain steroid medications, and nutrition professionals are excluded from participating.

Over a 14-day study period (during April - June), participants will agree to: travel 5- 6 times to the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center; drink a special water solution which will be used to help measure the calories they burn, be interviewed three times by a trained interviewer about the foods they eat, and have blood and urine samples collected and their body composition measured.

Information Meetings: Interested? You must attend a 1-hour information meeting at the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center, Center Drive, Building 307, Room 114, Beltsville, MD 20705. Specific questions about the study will be addressed at the meeting. For dates, times and dirving directions click here; you must attend ONE of them to participate.

Men Needed Nutrition Study

The Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center is recruiting subjects for a Nutrition Study. Men with normal blood pressure without medication, aged 35-65 years old, will be selected after a medical valuation and blood and urine screening. Subjects will be asked to complete a nutrition questionnaire and consume test diets foods containing starch and/or fiber. Diet will be controlled for three days during 10 separate weeks.

All food will be provided by the Center for these days and no other food or beverages containing calories will be allowed. On the third day a tolerance test will be given during which subject's will consume test foods. Blood and breath samples will be collected before and after each tolerance. The study is planned for the June through November of 2003. Subjects selected for the study will be required to consume breakfast Thursday-Friday and complete a tolerance test on Saturday at the Beltsville Human Study Facility. Subjects will be paid $1,500.00 for completing the study.
