12th Annual Spring Crafts Fair - Rescheduled

Nominations for Women of Color Research Sciences and Technology Awards

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center's (NASA's GSFC) African American Recognition Committee (AARC) is soliciting nominations for the upcoming 2003 Women of Color Research Sciences and Technology Awards for Government, Defense, and Industry. The Women of Color Awards and Conference is an annual event sponsored by Career Communications Group, Inc., located in Baltimore, Maryland. This organization celebrates the superior achievements of minority women in the workplace. The conference provides encouragement and promotes educational opportunities for aspiring professional women in business, engineering, science, management and today's world of innovative technology. The award identifies exceptional women who are making outstanding contributions in the Federal Government, Defense, and in the Private Industry sector.

AARC and Goddard takes pride in acknowledging past winners of this prestigious award including the 1999 Women of Color Award recipient for Career Achievement, Ms. Jacqueline Mims, and the 2002 Women of Color Award recipient for Educational Leadership, Ms. Charlene Malloy. Women's Networking Tea

The Women's Advisory Committee (WAC) is initiating a series of bimonthly events to bring together Goddard women from across the Center to increase networking and informal mentoring opportunities. Men and Women Needed for Energy/Nutrition Study

The USDA/John Hopkins Universtiy is holding information meetings to recruit an additional 100 adults 30 to 69 years old for summer groups in 2003. If you are already participating in this study, do not respond to this message -- you may not participate more than once.

This study is designed to learn about what people eat and the calories they burn. THIS IS NOT A FEEDING STUDY AND THERE ARE NO DIETARY RESTRICTIONS. Participants will receive $325 for completing the main study, plus $25 for each of two optional tests.

Following a medical evaluation and blood and urine screening, participants will be selected based on their age, height, weight, health status, and availability to complete the study. Diabetics, persons taking diuretics or certain steroid medications, and nutrition professionals are excluded from participating.

Over a 14-day study period (during April - June), participants will agree to: travel 5- 6 times to the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center; drink a special water solution which will be used to help measure the calories they burn, be interviewed three times by a trained interviewer about the foods they eat, and have blood and urine samples collected and their body composition measured.

Men Needed Nutrition Study

The Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center is recruiting subjects for a Nutrition Study. Men with normal blood pressure without medication, aged 35-65 years old, will be selected after a medical valuation and blood and urine screening. Subjects will be asked to complete a nutrition questionnaire and consume test diets foods containing starch and/or fiber. Diet will be controlled for three days during 10 separate weeks.

All food will be provided by the Center for these days and no other food or beverages containing calories will be allowed. On the third day a tolerance test will be given during which subject's will consume test foods. Blood and breath samples will be collected before and after each tolerance. The study is planned for the June through November of 2003. Subjects selected for the study will be required to consume breakfast Thursday-Friday and complete a tolerance test on Saturday at the Beltsville Human Study Facility. Subjects will be paid $1,500.00 for completing the study.

Call for Papers - 6th MAPLD International Conference

Abstracts are being accepted for the 6th annual Military and Aerospace Programmable Logic Devices (MAPLD) International Conference. Programmable devices, technologies and related aspects of digital engineering will comprise the major emphasis of this conference.

Volunteers Needed for Educational Program

Goddard Education Programs has received a request for volunteers for:

Timonium Elementary School Career Day, volunteers will serve as speakers to highlight their careers by providing interactive learning experience for students. There are booths available for students to visit whereby they can choose three careers that interest them the most. The activity will be an all day event on Wednesday, May 21, 2003, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm for the entire student body. The school is located in Baltimore County. Lunch will be provided. The Federation of Galaxy Explorers, volunteers are needed to assist in educating and inspiring youth in space related science and engineering by expanding the frontiers of science and technology. The mission of the Galaxy explorers is to educate, guide and prepare the next generation to accept the challenge of expanding humankind's presence in space. Volunteers will participate in after school activities with easy to understand educational materials that provide a hands-on understanding of space science, earth science, engineering and rocketry. Another theme, Space Citizenship, will address the role of government, power of citizens in a democracy, and the promise of space expressed in art, writing, history and business. Organized into local "Mission Teams" meeting on a monthly basis, materials, workbooks and web site support for instruction with hands-on activities are provided.
