On Thursday May 8, a ceremony was held recognizing the innovative joint collaboration between NASA, EPA, Maryland's Prince George's County and Dallas-based Toro Energy, Inc. that makes NASA Goddard Space Flight Center the first facility using methane gas to meet energy needs.

Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Honorable Christie Whitman, Mr. Jack Johnson, the County Executive for Prince George's County, and Paul Kaden, the president of Toro Energy of Maryland and NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe were present for this historical event.

Center Director, Al Diaz called this event the latest in an "amazing legacy of achievements." Diaz indicated that the landfill gas service would remove "a significant amount of a potent greenhouse gas from our environment, and we are putting it to use to heat our buildings." [at Goddard] He furthered that point by saying, "This is a remarkable achievement and it came about because of the dedicated efforts of a group of people from government and industry who believed they could make a difference, and do something together that would benefit NASA, benefit the community we live in, and benefit our home, planet Earth."

Centennial of Flight Activities Gain Momentum: NASA has a special connection with the Wright Brothers' 100th anniversary. In 1915, the United States Congress created the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, NASA's predecessor organization. During 2003, Inventing Flight offers an outstanding opportunity for NASA to reach the public and show pride in our part of aviation's evolution. Visit the NASA Glenn Centennial Website at: http://centennial.grc.nasa.gov for information about the Inventing Flight celebration. Volunteers are needed for most of the venues and participation is open to all NASA civil service employees, contractors and retirees with supervisory approval.
