Two NASA exhibits
were featured at the annual Andrews AFB Joint Open House in Camp
Springs, Md., May 16-18. The Goddard display offered visitors a
glimpse into the Center's many Earth and space science efforts,
and they greedily consumed several hundred handouts during the three-day
public event.
Astronaut Roger
Crouch, Payload Specialist aboard STS-83 and STS-94, greeted visitors
on Friday, which was open to Department of Defense cardholders and
their families. Crouch mesmerized children with his stories of space
flight, many of whom had their photo taken with the astronaut.
The booth was
mobbed on Saturday and Sunday with thousands of people interested
in every aspect of Goddard's mission. Free posters and lithographs
went flying off the tables as volunteers tried desperately to keep
up with demand. "It was like a feeding frenzy," said Public
Affairs Specialist Susan Hendrix. "But well worth every
minute knowing that we were able to reach out to so many people
in such a short period of time." Several dozen teachers and
home schoolers also stopped by the booth to obtain information about
NASA's educational programs.
NASA Langley
also joined forces with Goddard for this event, offering the public
a glimpse inside their air tunnel display and ongoing efforts at
the center.
Goddard plans
to participate in next year's Open House, which boasts something
for everyone - an air show, static aircraft displays, recruitment
booths, and numerous food vendors.
