Code S Sponsored NASA CONNECT Program Wins Regional Emmy Award.

On Saturday, June 21, 2003, the NASA CONNECT program, "Data Analysis and Measurement: Having a Solar Blast!," received a regional Emmy® award in the Children/Youth Program category. Senior Producer, Bill Bensen (Crewestone Technologies) accepted the award at the Pacific Southwest Regional Awards Ceremony. This is the tenth Emmy nomination and eighth Emmy® award for NASA CONNECT.

In the program students learn how NASA researchers study the Sun. They learn how satellite technology plays a pivotal role in helping NASA researchers understand the Sun-Earth connection. Students learn about three current satellites that monitor the Sun: SOHO, ACE, and IMAGE. They also receive information about HESSI, a satellite that will study solar flares. Students observe NASA researchers using data analysis and measurement to determine the solar cycle of the Sun. By conducting hands-on and web activities, students make connections between NASA research and the mathematics, science, and technology they learn in their classrooms.

NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, as well as Dr. Eric Christian, Dr. Sten Odenwald, Dr. Terry Kucera of NASA Goddard and Dr. Michelle Larson of the University of California at Berkeley - are featured in the program. Program partners include NCTM, AIAA Foundation, The United States Naval Observatory, the University of California at Berkeley, the Maryland Science Center (Baltimore, MD), Hardy Middle School (Georgetown, Washington, DC), The Odyssey School (Baltimore, MD), University of Maryland, AIAA Washington DC Professional Chapter, Riverdeep, and ePALS. Melissa Joan Hart is the program's featured celebrity.
