Temporary Closing of Baltimore-Washington Parkway Bridge for Restoration

The Facilities Management Division began the restoration of the B-W Parkway Bridge in April 2003. The project has progressed to the point requiring additional safety measures. Therefore, the bridge spanning the B-W Parkway will be closed from September 3, 2003 through February 2004 to maximize the safety of pedestrians, motorists and construction personnel. The Security Gate #3 on Explorer Road at the Parkway is unaffected by the bridge closure and will remain open according to its normal operating hours. The northbound exits will remain accessible to vehicle traffic. Those entering the Center from the B-W Parkway southbound lane are encouraged to use the Greenbelt Road or Soil Conservation Service Road entrances. After the bridge reopens there will be continued construction work underneath the bridge to abate the existing lead paint and repaint the steel girders starting in March 2004 and finishing in June 2004.

In otherwords:

Those commuting from Baltimore:

  • Cannot enter the Center using the B-W Parkway Goddard exit (bridge overpass is closed to you)
  • Should enter the Center at the Soil Conservation Service Road entrance (East gate) or use Greenbelt Road
  • May leave the Center using the Parkway gate exit
  • Those commuting from DC:

  • Can enter the Center using the B-W Parkway Goddard exit
  • Must leave the Center using the East gate (Soil Conservation Service Road) or Main Gate Exit (bridge overpass is closed to you)
  • We appreciate your patience as the Parkway bridge undergoes this major reconstruction project. For more information on the restoration project, please go to http://gsfc-artemis.gsfc.nasa.gov/220/fmdproj.html
