Space and Cosmic Ray Physics Seminar

What: Hina Khan of Goddard's Laboratory for Extraterrestrial Physics will discuss 'Low Energy Neutral Atoms in the Magnetosphere: IMAGE/LENA Observations of Ionospheric Outflow and Cusp-related Emissions.' Mr. Khan will provide an overview of the different sources of neutral atom emissions observed from within the magnetosphere. The ionospheric outflow component is principally caused by solar wind disturbances impacting the magnetopause resulting in pressure variations in the magnetosphere that cause a surge in ionospheric outflow. Clear evidence of this process has been observed and with the IMAGE satellite along with the global ionospheric observations of the ionosphere on short timescales and investigating the upwelling of plasma during solar wind disturbances. Furthermore, IMAGE/LENA observes neutral atom emissions from the magnetosheath, which can be associated with the cusp-like signatures in the ionosphere. Ground-based radar data are presented showing the cusp features during a time of enhanced neutral atom emission at LENA. The analysis shows a clear relationship between these observations indicating that low energy neutrals are produced as a result of the erosion of the magnetopause boundary.

When/Where: Monday, Sep 22 at 4:30 p.m., University of Maryland, Computer and Space Sciences Building in room 2400. Tea and cookies will be from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

For free parking please park in lot DD or anywhere on levels 1-2 in lot B (the big parking garage) after 4.00 pm. Make sure that you park in a spot WITHOUT a parking meter.

The fall Space and Cosmic Ray Physics Seminars are sponsored by the Department of Physics, University of Maryland, and the Institute for Physical Science and Technology, University of Maryland

VITS Software Engineering Technology Infusion Teleconference

What: Take advantage and mark your calendar for NASA's Applied Software Engineering Research: ViTS Software Engineering Technology Infusion Telecon! Anyone with responsibility and authority to collaborate on infusing software engineering tools and technology into a new or existing software development/maintenance activity, or who can influence the decision makers-for example should attend this presentation. In addition, both NASA civil servants and contractors can attend. DISCOVER low-risk opportunities for your software development team to benefit from recent, applied software engineering research technologies in areas such as:

  • Requirements analysis
  • Usability analysis
  • Cost estimation and budget risk assessment
  • State-of-the-art code inspection
  • Technical risk assessment
  • Automated code analysis
  • Find out what new software engineering technologies are available right now to help your project reduce risk, produce higher quality code and still meet tough deadlines.

Attend this short ViTS introduction to preview these opportunities and find out how your project can benefit. Collaborations can be structured to meet your project's requirements-some may be externally funded to cover technology transfer costs, including training, installation, and support for your team by the technology developers.

    When/Where: Tuesday, Sept 23, 2003 at 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. EST. Seating is limited in ViTS rooms.

To register, visit: http://ic.arc.nasa.gov/reg/ to reserve your place in this presentation!

    EOY Island Party

A great DJ and a catered dinner will highlight a fun End of the Year (EOY) party at the Rec Center on September 25 at 4:30 p.m. The menu includes: 1 lb. steamed shrimp per person plus all-you-care-to-eat jerk chicken, fresh grilled burgers/hot dogs, side dishes, and beer/wine/sodas. PLUS cash door prizes! Tickets are on sale at the GEWA Store and cost $20/person til September 19. Only 200 tickets will be sold, and no tickets will be sold after September 19 (no exceptions). (Sponsored by GEWA)

    Upcoming Training

    Basic Continuous Risk Management Course

This course familiarizes the student with the fundamentals of Continuous Risk Management (CRM) using hypothetical space flight project case study with an interactive teaching approach that combines lecture with exercises and group discussion. This training is consistent with CRM requirements identified in NPG 7120.5, NASA Program & Project NASA Program and Project Management Processes and Requirements, and NPG 8000.4, Risk Management.

    You will learn

    • How to: (1) Identify risks in a specific format; (2) Analyze risk probability, impact, and timeframe; (3) Plan approaches; (4) Track risks through data compilation and analysis; (5) Control and monitor risks; (6) Communicate and document the process and decisions
    • How to implement CRM within an organization using a variety methods and tools;
    • How to tailor the CRM process for your organization.

    Who Should Attend
All GSFC personnel interested in learning basic risk management skills. Personnel with flight program/project management, resource management engineering, mission operations, and assurance responsibility; Professionals involved in managing, identifying, or reviewing of risks, risk management plans, or risk assessments.

    When/Where: Monday, Sept. 29 and Tuesday, Sept 30 in the bldg 1training center Room E100D from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Minimum/Maximum number of students: Class size is limited to 20

For more information please visit the Systems Management Office Continuous Risk Management (CRM) web site at http://crm.nasa.gov or contact Steve Botzum at (301) 286-8521.

    IDP Workshops

In the IDP Workshop for Supervisors and the IDP Workshop for Employees, many questions have come up around the IDP process. Under OHR's career development page, there is a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) that have come from both supervisors and employees. These questions have been answered by OHR staff and legal counsel. Please take time to review these FAQs at http://ohr.gsfc.nasa.gov/DevGuide/idp.htm. Questions? Please contact Tracey White.
