Center Director, Al Diaz welcomes students of Anne Beers Elementary

It was a day of exploration and excitement for members of Anne Beers Elementary who visited Goddard's Visitor Center on October 10 to learn more about space exploration.

The students were first welcomed in the Earth Science Gallery by the Center Director. "I am like the mayor of a small city," he told the crowd of more than 40 students. "My job is to insure that all the employees have what they need to include lights, water, heat, tools and supplies to succeed in their various missions here.

"We want everyone to be excited about the challenging work we do here," said Al Diaz. After his welcome address he spent time answering questions from the kids that ranged from what kind of science do you do here to how do Nebia form?

There were many scheduled activities for the kids during the day to include a scavenger hunt, Hubble Telescope presentation and a visit to other parts of Goddard facilities.

Anne Beers is one of only 50 schools competitively selected from across the country representing 30 states. The Explorer Schools Program, a major new education initiative for NASA, was created to spark innovative science and mathematics instruction directed specifically at students in grades 5 through 8.

The new initiative, sponsored by the NASA Education Enterprise in collaboration with the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), establishes a three-year partnership between NASA and 50 NASA Explorer School teams, consisting of teachers and education administrators from diverse communities across the country.

Anne Beers Elementary School is located in a middle class residential neighborhood in the District. It was opened in 1942 as a tribute to Anne Duvall Beers, one of the first women to serve in an important administrative position in the District of Columbia Public School System.
