Annual Library Event Recognizes Outstanding Achievement, Future Goals (cont'd)

  Dr. Ed Rogers talked about knowledge management.

It was then time for Dr. Ed Rogers, Goddard's Knowledge Management Architect of Knowledge, People and Value to explain how knowledge management is being understood and used at Goddard. "The nature of our work is the type of work that motivates people to want to come to work and that's a good start," said Rogers.

His 45-minute presentation included an explanation on the processes and expected outcomes of being knowledge management smart. He stated that for Goddard, knowledge management should increase knowledge utilization, mission safety and assurance, and Goddard should realize an increase in core competencies.

There were many demonstrations for all to see throughout the day

There were demonstrations throughout the day that included the Digital Video Technologies. The library staff reports that the library's Digital Knowledge Preservation project is well underway with the archiving, maintaining, and distributing streaming video to patrons throughout the Center.

There were also demonstrations of the MyLibrary Portal and other web sites available to Goddard community. The demonstrations revealed the capabilities and coordinated efforts that have been established with other organizations throughout the Center.

In an afternoon session, Dr. Howard McCurdy, professor of Public Affairs and Chair of the Public Administration department at American University in Washington, D.C. spoke on the Influence of Low-Cost Initiatives on the NASA Space Flight Program.

Throughout the day there were refreshments served and the opportunity for members of the Goddard community to mingle.

The library has been recognized in the past as a leader and was selected as The Federal Library of the Year for 2002. The Goddard library was recognized and commended for outstanding, innovative and sustained achievements by a

federal library or information center. With over 1,000 federal libraries, competition for this award is always keen.

This year's event was an opportunity to appreciate the efforts of a group that continues to evolve their assistance to Goddard.

The library use to be a place you would visit to retrieve stored information. Today at Goddard it has become a more active partner in not only storing but also the actively sharing of information to and for everyone.

The library is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. but closed on Federal holidays.
