Space and Cosmic Ray Physics Seminar

What: Larry J. Paxton from the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Laurel, Md will present on " Exploring the Upper Atmosphere with the NASA TIMED Mission.' The TIMED mission has focused on the region between 60 and 180 km in altitude. This region, the mesosphere lower thermosphere and ionosphere or MLTI, is a marvelous test bed of our understanding of the physical and chemical processes that shape the atmosphere (it lies at the juncture between the lower atmosphere which can force it from below and the solar wind driven magnetosphere which can drive it from above).

When/Where: Monday, Nov 10 at 4:30 p.m., University of Maryland, Computer and Space Sciences Building in room 2400. Tea and cookies will be from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Education & Outreach Colloquium

What: Dr. Spencer Weart, Director of the Center for the History of Physics at the American Institute of Physics, will provide a historical perspective on how the public learned about global warming.

Risk Management Meeting

What: All risk managers, risk management practitioners and anyone else interested in a lively discussion on topics related to risk management are invited to participate in the next Risk Management Practitioners Meeting, sponsored by the Systems Management Support Office, Code 306.

The following items are on the agenda for this meeting:

  • A demonstration of the PRIMEX Risk Management Data Base tool
  • A presentation and discussion on writing Risk Statements by Warren Connely, Chief of Code 306
  • Discussion of various risk management subjects of interest

IDP Workshops

In the IDP Workshop for Supervisors and the IDP Workshop for Employees, many questions have come up around the IDP process. Information Science & Technology (IS&T) Colloquium

What: Robert Grossman, director, Laboratory of Advanced Computing and National Center for Data Mining at University of Illinois at Chicago will discuss "Beyond Data Grids: Data Webs, Lambda Grids, and All That." Grossman will give an overview of data webs, including a comparison of data webs and data grids. He also describes DataSpace, which is an open source infrastructure to create data webs. As the size of remote data sets grow, developing more effective network and data protocols becomes critical.

Special Director's Colloquia

In observance of Safety and Mission Week, November 17 - 21 there will be two special Director's Colloquia that all employees are encourage to attend. Safety and Mission Success Week is designed to provide all employees an opportunity to read and discuss CAIB's report recommendation.

The Satisfication Partnership: Manager and Employee Roles in the Workplace Fulfillment

What: Dr. Beverly Kaye, founder and ceo of Career Systems International will discuss, 'The Satisfcation Partnership: Manager and Employee Roles in the Workplace Fulfillment.' This colloquium will provide managers with a menu of ways to engage, develop and retain the intellectualy capital in which Goddard has already invested. It will also spotlight on the individual, as well. This session gives managers and employees concrete tips for improving workplace satisfaction.

Lessons Learned from the Columbia Accident

What: All employees are encouraged to attend the special Director's Colloquium on the "Lessons Learned from the Columbia Accident" by Dr. Amy Donahue, senior adviosor to the Administrator for Homeland Security. The Columbia recovery effort was on of the largest in history. It happened to also conicide with one of the most significant government reorganizations in history - the creation of the new Department of Homelan Security. It is hoped that out of this terrible tragedy can come lessons for this new Federal department and other agencies that are required to develop capacity for large-scale response and recovery as part of the their homeland security missions. Thi colloquium describes the Columbia shuttle recoviery operation and draws out the importan lessons of this effort.

Technology Expo
