Institute for Space Studies (GISS)
GISS is a division of Goddard's' Earth Science Directorate. It was established to do basic
research in space and Earth sciences in support of Goddard Programs.
Landsat In
1992, the US Congress authorized the procurement, launch and operation of a new Landsat
satellite. This new system, Landsat 7, launched successfully on April 15, 1999. It is the
latest in a series of earth observation satellites dating back to 1972. The twenty-two
year record of data acquired by the Landsat satellites constitutes the longest continuous
record of the earth's continental surfaces. Preservation of the existing record and
continuation of the Landsat capability were identified in the law as critical to land
surface monitoring and global change research.

NSSDC Earth Science Data in Transition
RSD Program is designed to encourage the development of innovative applications of earth and space science remote sensing data. By stimulating broad public use, via the Internet, of the databases maintained by NASA and other agencies, the program will encourage schools, businesses and citizens to access and use earth and space science data, contribute to the implementation of a National Information Infrastructure (NII), stimulate US economic growth, and improve the quality of life.
Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor Project (SeaWIFS) provides quantitative data on global ocean bio-optical properties to the Earth science community.
Triana - announces their new website containing fascinating mission facts, timelines, science objectives, and simulations. Triana is a mission dedicated to helping scientists construct more accurate models of Earth's climate and answering a key Earth Science question-- how solar radiation affects climate. Named after Rodrigo de Triana, the lookout who first saw the New World from Columbus' ship, Triana will start its 1 million-mile journey to L1 (the LaGrange neutral gravity point between the Earth and the Sun) aboard a Space Shuttle late in 2000. Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) - is responsible for archiving, cataloging, quality controlling and distribution of radar and rain gauge obtained from the several Ground Truth sites and/or associated field experiments. TRMM is being built at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center while the precipitation radar is being developed in Japan.
Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) - has general information on ozone satellite retrieval. The images and data contained here are provided by the Ozone Processing Team (OPT) located at Goddard.
