Synopsis

BRINE SHRIMP ARE SET TO BLAST OFF ON A STS-108 SPACE SHUTTLE MISSION G01-075 11/13/01 00:06:14 A team of excited high school students will soon see their year of hard work pay off when an experimental payload containing brine shrimp roars into space on the Space Shuttle Endeavor. The experiment was a 2001 NASA Student Involvement Program (NSIP) competition winner. The experiment was created, built and prepared at the DuVal High School in Lanham, Maryland. The goal of the experiment is to see how brine shrimp develop in microgravity and compares the shrimp to those shrimp raised in the normal gravity environment on Earth.

TAPE CONTENTS:

ITEM (1): Students Prepare Their Space Project - Students examine common brine shrimp, often called "sea monkeys" and scientifically known as the zooplankton Artemia. The students learn to carefully combine salt water and dormant shrimp cysts to study the shrimp's normal development on Earth. While in space, a batch of dormant shrimp cysts will be injected into salt water where they will hatch. The students will study the development of the brine shrimp in microgravity and compare them with those hatching and growing in their classroom.
