Synopsis

NASA'S MODIS / TERRA AIDS DISASTER RELIEF EFFORT G00-094 10/11/00 00:04:24With the threat of more torrential rains in Southeast Asia, NASA is able to help pinpoint where critical emergency food supplies must first be sent.Ê The MODIS instrument onboard the Terra satellite produces images that are used in a global flood monitoring system. After converting available satellite imagery into precise geographical information, this precious data is available to the science community via the World Wide Web, and is used by the United Nations World Food Program staff.

TAPE CONTENTS:

ITEM (1): Spectacular Composites of The Mekong River Flooding - The MODIS instrument on board the Terra satellite created 8-day composite images of the precise location of flooded areas along the Mekong River in Cambodia and Vietnam.Ê These composite images are blended together to produce one image that combines all cloud-free views.Ê These data sets were collected on June 8-16, July 19-26, August 20-27, and August 28-Sept 4, 2000.Ê

a. Composite Image Comparison (June 8-16 and July 19-26, 2000)

b. Composite Image Comparison (July 19-26 and August 20-27, 2000)

c. Composite Image Comparison (August 20-27 and August 28-September 4, 2000)
ITEM (2): MODIS Satellite Animation - Satellite imagery outshines older methods.Ê The MODIS instruments produces dramatic, global images that converts available satellite imagery into precise geographic information on flooded areas that can be distributed to disaster relief agencies throughout the World Wide Web
ITEM (3): Terra Satellite Beauty Shot
ITEM (4): EROS Data Center
ITEM (5): Map Comparisons "B" Roll - By overlaying the MODIS maps with maps of crop production, poverty level, and land cover and land use derived from Landsat images, comparisons are made to pinpoint areas hardest hit by the current flooding in Southeast Asia.
