Synopsis

EARTH SCIENCES PROGRAM RESOURCE REEL G97-045 12/5/97 00:30:33This tape is a compilation of resource footage collected from NASA Centers affiliated with NASA's Earth Science Program in 1997.

TAPE CONTENTS:

WEATHER - UNDERSTANDING AND FORECASTING

ITEM (1): GOES (NOAA/NASA) ANIMATION - animation depicting the relative positions of the GOES 8 and 9 satellites, the launch of GOES-K and its relative parking orbit.

ITEM (2): GOES (NOAA/NASA) VIRTUAL REALITY - Researchers at the Goddard Space Flight Center develop virtual reality and computer modeling tools to analyze weather and climate research.
TROPICAL RAINFALL MEASURING MISSION

ITEM (3): TRMM ANIMATION/CLEANROOM B-ROLL - animation of the TRMM spacecraft and b-roll of TRMM in the cleanroom.
STUDYING CHANGES ON EARTH

ITEM (4): LANDSAT-7 ANIMATION - animation of the LANDSAT-7 spacecraft due to be launched in 1998.

ITEM (5): LANDSAT IMAGES :

a) Rondonia, Brazil Comparison - Images taken 6/75, 8/86, and 6/92 where deforestation of the tropical forests has taken place. Deforested land and urabn areas appear as light blue; healthy vegetation appears red.

b) Kuwait Comparison - These images illustrate the extent of the oil fires. They were taken 8/31/90, 2/23/91 & 11/14/91. The second image shows the city obscured by smoke. The third image was acquired after the fires had been extinquished.

c) LANDSAT Single Images:

  • South Florida

  • New York City, NY

  • Salton Sea, CA

  • San Francisco Bay, CA

ITEM (6): SHUTTLE IMAGING RADAR (SIR-C) ANIMATION - Animation of the instrument. Two views of the Nile River. Top image taken with color infrared film from the sShuttle in 1995. The radar image at the bottom was acquired by SIR-C/X-SAR instrument onboard the Shuttle in 1994.

ITEM (7): SHUTTLE LASER ALTIMETER (SLA) FLY-BY - Animated fly-by of a SIR-C simulated flight from Lake Tahoe to Death Valley, CA. Data collected from 1994-1996.

ITEM (8): SHUTTLE LASER ALTIMETER (SLA) - The shuttle laser altimeter measures the height of topographical features using a laser beam.

  • OCEANS

ITEM (9): TOPEX/POSEIDON (Ocean Circulation) - Animation of the deployment and operation of the NASA Scatterometer. Includes observations and video of the radar altimeter which is used to measure sea surface height.

ITEM (10): TOPEX/POSEIDON (EL NINO) DATA ANIMATIONS:

    a) 3-D Wind Stress Anomalies & Sea Surface Temperature Animation - This 3D data pattern shows wind stress anomalies (arrows) and sea surface temperatures (colors). The data shows changes from normal ocean conditions for the period from 8/96 to 8/87. The animation shows an eastward moving wave which raises the sea level in response to wind changes 1/3 of the way around the globe in the western Pacific. By summer the wave has arrived at the coast of South America reducing the usual upwelling of cold water and increasing temperatures by as much as 9 degrees F. The warming causes local winds to converge reducing the strength of the trade winds.

    b) 3-D Sea Surface Height & Temperature Animation - The ocean is not a flat surface. It has subtle variations caused by ocean currents. This 3D animation combines data of sea surface height and temperature (color). The height has been exaggerated to illustrate correlation between the temperature anomaly and the upwelling of warm water near the equator.

    c) Sea Surface Height & Wind Stress Anomaly Animation - The following is an animation of sea surface height and wind stress anomalies. Sea surface temperature data from the Advanced Very Hlight Resolution Radiometer instrument onboard the NOAA-7 satellite.

ITEM (11): SEASTAR/SEAWIFS ANIMATION - Animation of the SeaStar spacecraft.

ITEM (12): DATA IMAGES FROM SEAWIFS:

  • a) Global Biosphere

  • b) North America

  • c) Chesapeake Bay

  • d) Gult of Mexico

  • e) Indonesian Fires

  • f) Africa
  • OZONE

    ITEM (13): TOMS ANIMATIONS:

    a) Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) - Animation of low Arctic ozone levels from 1997. Higher levels are in red, lower levels are in purple. The black circle represents an area where data was not collected due to the lack of sunlight at the pole during the winter.

    b) Animation Depicting How Ozone Molecules Split - Ozone protects the Earth by absorbing harmful UV radiation. The ozone molecule is split into one free oxygen atom and one molecule of ordinary O2.

    UPPER ATMOSPHERE RESEARCH SATELLITE (UARS)

ITEM (14): UARS ANIMATIONS - Animation of the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite.

    HOLOGLOBE '95

ITEM (14): HOLOGLOBE ANIMATIONS - animation of cloud patterns, water temperatures, wind currents, and storm systems, the ocean floor, plate tectonics, volcanoes, seasonal changes on land, and night views.
