snowstorm across midwest US as seen by MODIS

Snowstorm Blankets Midwestern U.S.

An early blast of wintry weather swept across the midwestern United States on November 27-28, 2001, leaving a wide swath of snow and ice on the ground extending from northern Texas up into the Dakotas and as far east as Michigan. More than 2 feet of snow fell in parts of the Dakotas, Wisconsin and Michigan. By December 1, the clouds had cleared enough to afford the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) this true-color view of the midwest. The wide swath of white snow, contrasted with the brownish colors of the bare surface, reveals the extent of the region affected by the snowstorm. This scene spans from Ontario, Canada, and Minnesota (upper right) westward across the Dakotas and Montana (upper left). Moving southward, we see the storm blanketed half of Nebraska and the northeast corner of Colorado (lower left). Click here for higher resolution images.

SeaWIFS image of Hurrican Olga

Hurricane Olga

NASA's Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) caught this image of Olga kicking up large ocean swells near Bermuda yesterday, November 28, as the storm's eye hovered due east of the island. Olga's only forecasted effect on North America is strong swells for the next few days. Late-season storm Olga barely formed before the November 30 hurricane season ended. She is not expected to cause significant damage. Image courtesy:NASA/ SeaWiFS/Orbimage.

Taklimakan Desert

Taklimakan Desert

The Taklimakan Desert in northwest China is a vast region of sand desert sitting in a depression between two high, rugged mountain ranges. Seen in this true-color MODIS image from October 27, 2001, the Taklimakan's rolling sand dunes stretch out over several hundred thousand square miles in the Xinjiang region of China. The desert is hemmed in to the north by the snow-covered Tien Shan Mountain range and to the south by the rugged Kunlun Mountains. At the lower left corner of the image is the Karakoram Mountain range, where the world's second highest mountain, K2, casts a blue shadow (see high-resolution image for an up-close look). Desertification and shifting sand dunes are a major concern for the farmers and herders who live at the Taklimakan's edge. At the bottom of the image lies the Tibetan Plateau. MODIS image of Appalachian fires

MODIS Sees Appalachian Fires Raging

Drought conditions have plagued the Appalachian Mountains in October and November, and low relative humidity combined with dry leaves on the ground has created extreme fire danger in many eastern states. This true-color MODIS image made from data collected on November 13, 2001, shows smoke from numerous fires (indicated in red), predominantly in southern West Virginia (image center), Kentucky (to the southwest), and Tennessee (south). The fires, at least some of which are likely the result of arson, have burned thousands of acres throughout the region. Unfortunately for those fighting the fires, the fire danger is likely to remain high, with no significant rain expected in the near term.

South of Lake Erie, the southernmost of the Great Lakes, numerous aircraft contrails crisscross Ohio. Water vapor emitted with engine exhaust condenses in the cold, dry air at high altitudes, leaving behind a trail of condensation-a contrail. Image credit: The MODIS Land Rapid Response System.

SeaWIFS spacecraft cloud-free image of Eastern U.S.
Cloudfree Eastern U.S.

The eastern United States were uncommonly cloud-free as seen in this SeaWiFS image on November 6. The lack of water clouds makes the smoke clouds over Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia stand out even more. Snow cover is visible on the ground in northern Ontario and Quebec. SeaWIFS spacecraft time series image of Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan Over Time

Two possible explanations for the brightening were advanced in 1999: a large bloom of cyanobacteria such as microcystis or an inorganic precipitation of calcium carbonate triggered by warming surface waters.

A variety of atmospheric aerosols and clouds over the lake also effect the perceived brightness of the water from image to image in this 2001 time series. Image courtesy: Provided by the SeaWiFS Project, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center, and ORBIMAGE.

Deforestation in Brazil

The deforestation of the Amazon River Basin is one of the world's best-known environmental problems. This image shows fires and smoke plumes near the Xingu River in the Brazilian Amazon. Fire locations are superimposed in red on the true-color image, taken by the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA's Terra satellite on May 2, 2001.

MODIS images of multiple fires burning in Russia.

Fires in Russia

This scene shows a large number of fires burning across southeastern Russia, releasing a considerable amount of smoke and haze into the atmosphere over the entire region. This true-color image was acquired on May 13, 2001, by the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), flying aboard NASA's Terra spacecraft. The many red pixels correspond to the locations of fires burning on the ground.  For more information and a slightly larger image, click here.  For print resolution, click here.

Galapagos Oil Spill Seen by SeaWiFS

Click on pic to enlarge and see San Cristobal Island

SeaWiFS captured this view of the Galapagos Islands on Sunday, 21 January 2001, several days after a tanker ran aground off the western coast of San Cristobal Island releasing thousands of gallons of oil into the ocean creating a spill that has grown from 50 to 117 square miles. Aerial photographs show a large discolored patch in the waters that correspond to a feature seen in the SeaWIFS image.  For more information, go to the SeaWiFS home page.
