SeaWIFS Images - Northern Hemisphere Fall & Winter

Cool SeaWIFS Images - "Although originally designed to observe the oceans, SeaWiFS provides a unique capability to study the land and atmospheric processes as well," said Dr. Gene Feldman, oceanographer, who heads SeaWiFS' data processing team at  Goddard. "As a result, we can monitor changes in the global biosphere with a single sensor over land and ocean."

Animated gif of Earth

"Earth Today"

(136KB Animated GIF)

On Friday, July 2, a new exhibit featuring 10-foot high images of Earth opened at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. This exhibit, called "Earth Today" will provide a digital view of our dynamic planet to the museum's visitors, giving them some of the latest information on Earth's atmosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere. This project was developed with cutting-edge technology in science visualization and information technology by Goddard's Science Visualization Studio through funding from the Goddard Director's Discretionary Fund.

Earth-orbiting satellites and global monitoring networks are continuously collecting images and data on our planet's atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere and biosphere. This makes it possible to see conditions such as the extent of cloud cover and the temperature of the ocean's surface waters as they are on the Earth today.

Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Science Results

Research scientists using data from the recently launched Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite, a joint U.S./Japanese mission, are shedding new light on the phenomenon known as La Niņa. TRMM research team members have successfully retrieved sea-surface temperature data from the TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI) instrument onboard the spacecraft.   For more information, go to the TRMM Homepage at:

(96 KB JPEG)

1st Image from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) onboard NOAA-K

The image is from channel 2, a visible channel, of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), a six channel visible/infrared imager onboard NOAA-K.  The image was captured just minutes after the visible channels were enabled approximately two hours after the launch of NOAA-K. The IR channels are scheduled to be enabled on May 31st.

NOAA-K SPACECRAFT READY FOR LAUNCH

This photo shot on April 8, 1998 shows the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)-K Polar-Orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite being prepared for launch. The spacecraft had just completed all testing, and was awaiting transportation to the NASA processing facility (Building 1610) at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. The spacecraft is scheduled to be launch May 13, 1998 on a Lockheed Martin Titan II launch vehicle.

Public Use of Remote Sensing Data Image Catalog; with previews

  • The RSD Program is designed to encourage the development of innovative applications of earth and space science remote sensing data. By stimulating broad public use, via the Internet, of the databases maintained by NASA and other agencies, the program will encourage schools, businesses and citizens to access and use earth and space science data, contribute to the implementation of a National Information Infrastructure (NII), stimulate US economic growth, and improve the quality of life.

Space radar images of Earth from the Shuttle

  • Spaceborne Imaging Radar-C/X-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SIR-C/X-SAR) is a joint U.S.-German-Italian project that uses a highly sophisticated imaging radar to capture images of Earth that are useful to scientists across a great range of disciplines. It was flown on STS-68 and STS-59.
