Fred A. Fahnestock was one of the nearly 250 employees at Goddard who recently decided to take the Agency-wide buyout and retire from government service. According to Fahnestock it was time to turn his attention to other pursuits. "I have decided to retire from NASA on March 31, 1995. I arrived at Goddard in its early days and have had a wonderful time working and playing with outstanding and wonderful people. The Mission Operations and Data Systems Directorate is a wonderfully competent team (civil servants and contractors) that provides outstanding support to its customers using world class capabilities that they developed and perfected. After 32 years plus at Goddard and over five years as director of Code 500, it is time to move on to new challenges and new horizons. The management team at Goddard is the best! I enjoyed very much working with a very competent, supportive and honest management team," Fahnestock said. As director of the Mission Operations and Data Systems Directorate, Fahnestock managed an organization that is charged with developing and operating the NASA Ground Network and the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite Network and the Payload Operations Control Center at Goddard. The organization accomplishes those tasks and supports NASA spacecraft, including the Space Shuttle, international spacecraft and launch vehicles, with 600 civil service and 4,000 contractor employees. Fahnestock graduated in 1958 from Newark College of Engineering, Newark, N.J. with a degree in electrical engineering. He began his career at Goddard in 1963. Fahnestock and his wife Medora, have eight children and live in Elkridge, Md. -30- NASA News National Aeronautics and Space Administration Goddard Space Flight Center Greenbelt, Maryland 20771 (301) 286-8955 _______________________________________ For Release: April 7, 1995
