July's activities include model rocket launches, video and lecture presentations, and tours of the Visitor Center and Goddard Space Flight Center. The Goddard Space Flight Center Visitor Center is located in Greenbelt, Md., on Soil Conservation Road. All events are free. The following are brief descriptions for inclusion in your calendar of events: Sunday, July 2 and 16, at 1 p.m. MODEL ROCKET LAUNCH All eyes will focus on the skies at the Goddard Space Flight Center Visitor Center model rocket launch on Sunday, July 2 and 16, at 1 p.m. Bring your own rocket or just come out and enjoy watching the other rocket enthusiasts. All launches are monitored for safety and are held weather permitting. Sunday, July 16, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. MODEL ROCKET CONTEST What do you do when you build your rocket, practice flying it and can land it on a dime? Come out to the 15th Annual Rocket Contest at the Goddard Space Flight Center and show off your skills! The contest runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be two events, parachute duration and parachute spot landing, prizes for the winners, and certificates for all participants. There is no charge for this event and you may register the morning of the contest. Saturday, July 8, 1 p.m. SATURDAY VIDEOS: "Newton In Space" To understand how space travel is possible requires an understanding of the concepts of mass and Isaac Newton's three laws of motion. Find out all about these three laws of motion at the Goddard Space Flight Center Visitor Center's showing of the video "Newton In Space" on Saturday, July 8, at 1 p.m. This video is appropriate for all ages. Sunday, July 23, 1 p.m. DISCOVER GODDARD PRESENTATION: "Astro-2: Ultraviolet Astronomy from the Space Shuttle" To improve our understanding of the universe, NASA worked with astronomers to develop the Astro observatory. Astro-2 expands the base of ultraviolet astronomical data and increases our understanding of the intricate and vibrant universe in which we live. On July 23, at 1 p.m. at the Goddard Space Flight Center Visitor Center, Goddard astronaut, Dr. Ronald Parise, of the Laboratory for Astronomy and Solar Physics, will recount the Astro-2 mission and discuss ultraviolet astronomy from the Space Shuttle. -30-
