Ernie J. Shannon April 22, 1996 Goddard Space Flight Center Greenbelt, Md. (301/286-6256) ernie.shannon@ccmail.gsfc.nasa.gov RELEASE NO. 96-24 NASA GODDARD TO PARTICIPATE IN EPA GREEN LIGHT PROGRAM Improved energy efficiency and lighting should result from the Goddard Space Flight Center's participation in the Environmental Protection Agency's Green Lights program. The Greenbelt, Md., NASA site is upgrading facilities by employing more energy-efficient lights that also improve lighting quality. The effort is part of an EPA program designed to reduce pollution caused by energy-inefficient lighting. The EPA is directing its program at other federal organizations and entering into agreements with them through memorandums of understanding (MOU). Goddard has long been an established leader in the study of Earth sciences," said Sherry Foster, director of Management Operations. "As the first NASA Center to become a Green Lights partner, we now establish ourselves as a leader in environmental and facilities management. By improving the lighting technology throughout our facilities, we will prevent pollution and save taxpayer dollars. It's a win-win situation." Under the MOU, the EPA agrees to provide state-of-the-art survey and analysis tools that allow organizations to survey lighting systems and needs. The EPA will coordinate training workshops on lighting fundamentals, technology, and management. Also, they will provide a financial assistance director to assist organizations which might lack adequate resources. In turn, the agency partner appoints an implementation manager, surveys all of its facility lighting, considers a full range of lighting options to reduce energy, documents improvements, and completes the upgrades by the year 2005. "Becoming a Green Lights partner is a key element in Goddard's Energy Management Program. As a Green Lights partner, we will receive valuable technical support to increase our lighting efficiency," said Barry Green, Goddard's Energy Manager and Green Lights Implementation manager. "The lighting upgrades will not only increase the quality of the lighting in work spaces, but also will result in substantial cost savings." A signing ceremony between representatives of the Environmental Protection Agency and the Goddard Space Flight Center will be held at Goddard, Monday, April 22, at 2 p.m. For more information about the event and the agreement, contact the Goddard Public Affairs Office at (301) 286-6256. -30-
