satellite time series tracks the growth the Rodeo-Chediski fire from June 19 through
June 30, 2002. As of July 1, the fire has charred more than 450,000 acres. The
images were captured by the Terra satellite's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer
(MODIS) instrument. The
sequence contains images from 6/19, 6/20, 6/21, 6/22, 6/23, 6/24, and 6/30. The
red colors reveal the locations and extent of the active fires. The cumulative
burned areas are shown in gray. Fire fighters and U.S. Forest Service managers
use MODIS data to help them allocate fire fighting resources and to plan the restoration
and recovery efforts after the fires have been extinguished. Terra
MODIS images acquired by MODIS Rapid Response System and by the Space Science
and Engineering Center, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Back
